Church History
Little River Baptist Church Founded in 1838

Little River Baptist Church can trace its roots to 1827, when twenty-six members of Beulah Baptist Church decided to form an “arm,” thus beginning a new church. These twenty-six people, along with other people living in Little River Valley, obtained three-fourths of an acre of land from Charles Barnett for a Meeting House.

Epaphroditus Hightower and Col. William Orr were made trustees. Mr. Hightower represented the Baptists on the building committee, and Col. Orr represented the other denominations. These two, along with the other men of Little River, built a Meeting House to be used by the Methodists, Presbyterians and Baptists.

The Beulah Baptist minutes state, “The Church met in fellowship at the Little River Meeting House, on October 21, 1837. The Arm of Little River petitions for a letter of dismissal to become a separate Church.” The Little River Baptist Church constitution was signed on November 15, 1838. Elder James Blythe of Beulah assisted in the constitution and was called to be the first pastor.

On September 8, 1877, H.P. Moore and his wife deeded two acres of land to the Church Trustees. The first building was built that fall.

Three buildings have been built on the land where the present Church stands. The second was built about 1906.

The present sanctuary was completed in January 1962. An educational wing was completed in May 1970, with a Bell Tower added later.

A Family Life Center, including 16 new Sunday school classrooms, a gymnasium/fellowship hall, media center, and kitchen and restroom facilities was completed and dedicated in November 2005.
